The female Yangtze giant softshell turtle passed away at the Suzhou Shangfangshan Forest Zoo in China, where she has lived since 2008. She was put under anesthesia during a fifth attempt to artificially inseminate her, a procedure that people hoped would help save her species from extinction. This time, she never woke up. With just three male Yangtze giant softshell turtles left, the death of the last female makes the species functionally extinct. “It is tragic that the only known female of this species has died,” the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) wrote in a statement, “but the real tragedy here is that this species has been decimated to near extinction by hunting and habitat destruction.” The female was first brought to the zoo in hopes that she would successfully mate with a 100-year-old male Yangtze giant softshell in residenc

  There are many instances in nature where a mother is found taking care of her babies. However a Canadian man named Mike Digout accidentally discovered a mother goose taking care of 47 goslings and presumably, not all of them are her own! Mike is a nature photographer. He started working from home, like everyone else, during the coronavirus pandemic. According to LadBible, he has been taking walks along the Saskatchewan riverbank near where he lives in Saskatoon, and that’s where he noticed the goose. Apparently he is not a big fan of the Canadian geese but he was intrigued by their activity, noticing that they were looking for places to nest. In May, Mike noticed the first batch of goslings had hatched and he started paying more attention to them.  “They’re so cute when they’re little – like little Tennis balls with legs. So I started taking pictures of the goslings while I was waiting for the beavers to come around,” Dodo  quoted Mike as saying.

A local fisherman in Cambodia has captured a true river monster that scientists believe is the world’s largest freshwater fish. Moul Thun, 42, hooked a massive stingray that weighs 661 pounds and measures 13-feet-long, breaking the previous record of a catfish, discovered in Thailand in 2005, which clocked in at 646 pounds. The stingray, nicknamed ‘Boramy’ or ‘full moon’ in the Khmer language, was snagged in the Mekong River that is famous for hosting various species of large fish. A team of scientists from the Wonders of Mekong research project helped tag, measure and weigh the ray before it was released back into the river . Justin Ewan, along with his friend Joshua Ku, were diving from a jetski off the coast of Long Reef beach in Sydney’s northern beach es suburb of Collaroy on Sunday when he spotted two ‘massive figures’ swimming towards him. Mr Ewan soon realised the dark figures were a pair of ‘curious’ sunfish measuring about 1.8metres in diameter. Two sunfish were spotted in waters off the coast of Long Reef beach, in Sydney’s northern beaches suburb of Collaroy.
