Mother of Uvalde victim runs for mayor in special election

The City of Uvalde approves a special election, as the current mayor announced a run for the Texas House of Representatives. Kimberly Mata-Rubio -- mother of victim Alexandria "Lexi" Rubio who was killed in the Robb Elementary School massacre last year -- announced Thursday she is running for mayor of the community. Her daughter was among the 19 fourth graders and two teachers who were killed on May 24, 2022, when a gunman attacked Robb Elementary School, the second-deadliest school shooting in American history. Mata-Rubio is seeking the position being vacated by Don McLaughlin, who has been Uvalde's mayor since 2014 and stepping down to run for a Texas House seat. The Nevada Legislature will convene Wednesday for a special session to consider whether to provide $380 million in public financing for a stadium that would host the Oakland Athletics on the Las Vegas Strip CARSON CITY, Nev. -- The Nevada Legislature is set to convene Wednesday for a special legislative session to consider whether to provide $380 million in public financing for a $1.5 billion stadium that would host the Oakland Athletics on the Las Vegas Strip. The public funding would mainly come from $180 million in transferable tax credits and $120 million in county bonds. Backers have pledged that the creation of a special tax district around the proposed stadium would generate enough money to pay off those bonds and interest. The plan would not directly raise taxes. The A’s would not owe property taxes for the publicly owned stadium. Clark County, which includes Las Vegas, would also contribute $25 million in credit toward infrastructure costs.
