More help arrives in Acapulco, and hurricane's death toll rises to 39 as searchers comb debris

More resources are arriving on Mexico’s battered Pacific coast and the death toll from Hurricane Otis is growing as more bodies are recovered from Acapulco’s harbor and under fallen trees and other storm debris ACAPULCO, Mexico -- More resources are arriving on Mexico's battered Pacific coast, and the death toll from Hurricane Otis is growing as searchers recover more bodies from Acapulco's harbor and under fallen trees and other storm debris. President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said Saturday that his opponents are trying to inflate the toll to damage him politically, but few expect the latest mark of 39 dead to be where it stops. Hundreds of families are still awaiting word from loved ones. Otis roared ashore early Wednesday with devastating 165 mph (266 kph) winds after strengthening so rapidly that people had little time to prepare. Kristian Vera stood on an Acapulco beach Saturday looking out toward dozens of sunken boats, including three of her own, all marked by floati...

Judge: Synagogue massacre suspect can face death penalty

The man charged in the deadliest attack on Jewish people in U.S. history has lost a bid to get the death penalty removed as a possible punishment PITTSBURGH -- The man charged in the deadliest attack on Jewish people in U.S. history has lost another bid to get the death penalty removed as a possible punishment. With jury selection underway at the federal trial of Robert Bowers, a judge ruled Tuesday against a defense motion that challenged the government's pursuit of the death penalty. U.S. District Judge Robert Colville said in his decision that Bowers' defense team “fails entirely to establish a basis upon which the court could conclude that the government has arbitrarily sought the death penalty in this case.” Bowers, of the Pittsburgh suburb of Baldwin, is charged with 63 criminal counts in the killings of 11 worshippers on Oct. 27, 2018, at the Tree of Life synagogue building where three congregations had gathered. The charges include 11 counts of obstruction of free exer...

Kevin Garnett has never been known as the forgiving type. He still has not allowed his jersey to be retired by the Minnesota Timberwolves due to a longstanding feud with their outgoing owner, Glen Taylor, and that isn't even his most famous beef. That honor belongs to former teammate Ray Allen. Allen and Garnett spent five seasons together with the Boston Celtics and won the 2008 NBA championship in their first season as teammates. However, Allen left the Celtics in 2012 to sign with the Miami Heat, Boston's chief rival at the time. The Celtics had just lost to LeBron James and the Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals, so the wound was fresh. For quite some time, the relationship remained frosty. But Allen attended Garnett's jersey retirement ceremony last season, and the relationship was finally confirmed to have been repaired when they hugged on the stage and Garnett said that Allen should be the...
