3 players Liverpool should have been targeting in January

Image
Liverpool are top of the Premier League and will take some serious toppling if they aren't to lift the title in Jurgen Klopp's final season. But planning and squad evolution can never stop if a club wants to remain consistently successful year after year. That makes every single transfer window an opportunity. And while Liverpool don't need major surgery at this moment in time, having completely overhauled their midfield last summer and assembled a top and broad forward line, little tweaks are always necessary. Andre Andre has just finished the 2023 Brazilian season / Francois Nel/GettyImages Liverpool have long been interested in Fluminense midfield talent Andre, who has also commanded attention from Premier League rivals Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Fulham. Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford was spotted in a nightclub in Belfast just hours before missing Friday's training session with the Red Devils, a report has claimed. Videos of Rashford in a night club began to emerge on social media after he missed training , with United officials insisting the footage was from a pre-agreed visit to Northern Ireland which was on Wednesday. Chelsea may sign new striker after fresh Christopher Nkunku injury

Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that Chelsea may be forced into signing a striker in January because of Christopher Nkunku's latest injury woe. The 26-year-old has played just four times for Chelsea after missing the first five months of the season with a serious knee injury, and has now been sidelined by a hip problem. The Blues have relied on Nicolas Jackson, another recruit last summer, to fill the void up front, but he's currently away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. That leaves Armando Broja, another player who has endured a glut of injury problems, as the club's only fit recognised centre forward. Asked by the media ahead of Chelsea's west London derby with Fulham about whether a new signing will be considered, head coach Pochettino admitted: "It's true that now in the next few days, we are going to see the situation. That's why I told you that I am a little worried. "I still don't have all the information about whether [Nkunku...

Donny van de Beek looks back on 'tough' Man Utd spell

Image
Donny van de Beek has admitted it was "tough" being at Manchester United and not playing as he now prepares to resurrect his career during an initial loan with Eintracht Frankfurt. Van de Beek joined the Bundesliga club until the end of the end of the season on the very first day of the January transfer window. The loan agreement includes an option for a permanent deal for up to €14m (£12m), inclusive of add-ons. The biggest thing for the Dutch midfielder is getting back to playing regularly after making only 69 club appearances – including an unsuccessful loan at Everton – in the last three and a half seasons. He had played almost as many (57) during his outstanding 2018/19 campaign at Ajax alone. "If you don't play as many Game s as you want, it's tough , but that's the past now," Van de Beek reflected on his time with United upon being presented to the media in Germany. "I'm [with Eintracht now] now and I'm positive, which is the most imp...

Declan Rice questions Arsenal's mentality after crushing Fulham defeat

Image
Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice has admitted the Gunners must work on their mentality after Sunday's surprise Premier League defeat to Fulham. Mikel Arteta's side have won just one of their last six games in all competitions and are without a win in their last three league outings - a run which has seen them fall from first to fourth since Christmas. After battling to a 1-1 draw with Liverpool, Arsenal were shockingly wasteful in a 1-0 defeat to West Ham United, but Arteta acknowledged this latest loss to Fulham needed to be judged separately because of just how poor the team was. Rice reflected to Sky Sports : "It is not good enough. The standards set over the course of the season have not been met in the last two games. "We let the fans down and we let ourselves down. We need to take more control. We need to have more self-belief, more desire, the mentality needs to be better. Rice was frustrated after the Game / Clive Rose/GettyImages "That’s where we need...

Nottingham Forest 2-1 Man Utd: Player ratings as awful Red Devils fall back into crisis

Image
Manchester United tumbled right back into chaos on Saturday evening with an abysmal 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest. With fans cautiously optimistic after the comeback win over Aston Villa, United put on an attacking disasterclass which saw them struggle to get shots on goal and they deservedly fell behind to a strike from Nicolas Dominguez after the break. A mistake from Forest goalkeeper Matt Turner handed Marcus Rashford an equaliser but parity would not last long as Morgan Gibbs-White pounced on some poor defending to secure a well-earned three points for Nuno Espirito Santo's men. How the game unfolded Dominguez saw a strike blocked inside the opening minute as Forest made a bright start to proceedings, while an uncomfortable clearance from Raphael Varane gave goalkeeper Andre Onana a huge scare when the ball ricocheted perilously across his goal line. United's first actual shot came in the 33rd minute as Aaron Wan-Bissaka's strike from outside the box was blocked and...

Erik ten Hag praises Man Utd defender's performance in Liverpool draw

Image
Erik ten Hag has hailed the performance of Raphael Varane in Manchester United's hard fought draw with Liverpool on Sunday. Varane has been sporadically utilised by Ten Hag throughout the 2023/24 campaign so far, with reports even suggesting that the player was keen to leave Man Utd during the upcoming January transfer window. The veteran defender was drafted back into the starting lineup on Sunday thanks to the ailment suffered by Harry Maguire during the midweek defeat to Bayern Munich, and he thoroughly impressed - racking up 15 clearances and winning 100% of his duals at Anfield. Speaking to the press after the win, Ten Hag was keen to single out Varane for praise , saying: "We know what he [Varane] is capable of, he has many such performance s and I think he did very well as the whole team in the partnership with Jonny Evans. "Both led the team from the back, also Andre Onana played a big part in it but I can mention all the players because it was a really good tea...
