Massive gold-encrusted rocks worth millions found in Australia

Image
Miners have discovered two massive gold-encrusted rocks estimated to be worth millions of dollars each in Western Australia. The biggest weighed 95kg (210lb) and was found to contain more than 2,400 ounces of gold. Canadian mining company RNC Minerals said it had extracted gold worth £9m from a mine near Kalgoorlie and the find was “extremely rare”. The second rock yielded around 1,600 ounces of gold and weighed in at 63kg (138lb). Professor Sam Spearing, director of the Western Australia School of Mines, said: “People do still record finding nuggets in goldfields, but typically they are less than several ounces. “Very, very seldom do we see results on that level. This is an exceedingly rare find and very exciting.” The Beta Hunt mine, where the giant nuggets were found , had been used to extract nickel until the discovery last week. Over the past week, approximately 9,250 ounces of high-grade gold was produced from the mine....

Britain’s biggest ever gold nugget worth £50,000 found in Scottish river

Image
But one lucky explorer is set for a windfall after discovering Britain’s largest ever gold nugget in a river in Scotland. Experts say that the 85.7g lump, which is the width of a golf ball, is worth at least £50,000 – and potentially much more. The valuable nugget was found lodged in a riverbed by a treasure hunter Gold expert Leon Kirk of Gold Panning Supplies described the discovery as ‘unprecedented’ and expressed his wish that a British museum would buy it. He added: ‘The nugget’s rarity means it is very hard to put a price on it. ‘I would say it is worth at least £50,000 but, as it’s rarer than a Aston Martin or a Faberge egg, a billionaire could easily come along and pay a lot more for it. ‘Historically, it is off the Richter scale.’ Gold expert Leon Kirk admires the nugget that’s valued at £50,000 He found it by ‘sniping’, which involves wearing a dry suit and snorkel and lying face down in a river. He said: ‘I was following a crack in the bedro...
